Ahead Of Schedule

I feel a little hypocritical posting about my son graduating Magna Cum Laude at 19 from the University of Toledo with his bachelors degree in media communication, because I write about imperfection. I want everyone who reads this to know that we should not be afraid to post or talk about our successes or our failures.

I also want parents to know that college at a young age is not for everyone and that is okay. We are privileged with the ability to choose the way we want to live our lives and the paths we choose to walk. That is the beauty of living in this country.  We have freedom of choice, and a great education system if we choose to use it.

Our choice was one that led us to higher education at a very young age. I saw a family on a talk show when my son was 7 or 8 heading to college early and I knew that was the path we would take. I talked to my son about it and that was the direction we headed in. I checked in on a yearly basis to see if that was still the course he would like to take, and we continued on.

Anyone can do anything, if you want it enough, but you gotta want it enough, other people can’t tell you you want it. You have to want it and that’s really the secret. -Sebastian Harloff

There was a lot of trial an error along the way and I have adjusted mistakes I made with him to provide a better way for my daughter, Alexis who took her first class at UT at the age of 12. She is currently enrolled in public high school this year for the experience, one Sebastian never had and deeply wishes he would have had. She plans to start full time on campus in the fall of 2020!

Watch out UT, here comes Sebastian’s younger sister, Alexis, who is headstrong and ready to take on a higher goal of graduating at 18 with her bachelors.

Was this without mistakes? No, and I explain all the nitty gritty about how we did it and the awkwardness of being on campus at 14 in my next book predicted to come out in 2021.

Two of my children have been college bound very young, but I support my children and their unique differences in whatever path they choose.
